Garlic Cheese Focaccia Buns

Remember how I've been trying to clean out my deep-freeze?  Guess what I found yesterday?  A few balls of pizza dough that I had left over from the last time I made BBQ Pizzas!  It was cold and yucky out yesterday, so I wasn't really in the mood to be outside manning a grill, but I was in the mood for some warm, cheesey, garlicy buns!!  The reason I'm calling them focaccia buns is because they didn't really rise an awful lot, but were nice and moist, still tender, slightly chewey and really flavourful!! Here's what I came up with...

Garlic Cheese Focaccia Buns
Ingredients:
1 pkg pizza dough (you could make it fresh or just buy it from the store)
1 cup old cheddar, grated
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup butter, melted
3 cloves garlic, finely minced
1-2 tsp dried oregano flakes
1-2 tsp coarse sea salt
flour for dusting

Method:
Start by letting your dough rise in a nice warm area for about 30-40 mins.  Punch it down and let it rise again for about another 30 mins.  (OR follow the instructions if you are using the pre-packaged stuff!) Preheat oven to 350degrees and prepare a 9x13 baking dish by greasing it with butter, set aside.

Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and stretch out to form a rectangle about 9x13.  Add the minced galic to the butter and then brush over the top of the dough.

Sprinkle the cheddar and parmesan on top and then the oregano flakes.

On the short side (9" side) start rolling the dough like a carpet.  Cut into 12 equal sliced and place in your baking dish.  Top with the sea salt.

Chuck in the oven and bake for about 40 mins, until the cheese is nice and golden brown on top.  Remove from oven and let cool on a rack for about 10 mins, then carefully lift out of the baking dish with a spatula.  Serve warm or store in an airtight container for a couple of days.

  1. I wanted to write: This smells sooo good. lol... Because I can smell it baking! Yummy. This is a great way of using the gluten-free dough from Bob's Red Mill I use for pizza....instead I could make cheese buns!

    Hope you're having a great weekend :)

  2. They look great! In Germany, it's typical for pizzerias to deliver a bag of pizza dough rolls/buns that are still warm from the oven - nothing better!
